How can I recycle my old Computer Monitor, Television
Set, or E-Waste?
If you buy a new computer or television set, getting
rid of your computer monitor or television set will not
be as simple as putting it in your trash can. Computer monitors
and television sets contain Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) and
have been designated as hazardous wastes by the State of
California. They are hazardous because they contain high
quantities of lead. Lead can cause poisoning in individuals
and can be especially harmful to young children. Because
CRTs are hazardous, they can no longer be disposed of in
landfills. Effective January 1, 2006, residents may
dispose of E-waste such as desktop and laptop
computers at the County of Orange Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Center. Other E-waste includes cell and cordless
phones, game consoles, stereos, microwaves and any other
electronic item that contains circuit boards. You may dispose
your computer monitor, television set, and e-waste at one
of the two nearby County of Orange Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Centers. Residents are responsible for removal
and destruction of all personal and valuable information
from the computer hard drives. The County of Orange will
not be responsible for any security information contained
on the hard drives. The centers are located at 17121 Nichols
Street, Huntington Beach, and 1071 Blue Gum Street, Anaheim.
Additional information regarding the collection centers
may be obtained by visiting
www.oclandfills.com
or by calling (714) 834-6752.

closest to the City of Cypress is located in Huntington Beach
at 17121 Nichols Street (at Rainbow Disposal, off Warner
Ave. between Beach Blvd. and Gothard Street, use Gate 6).

E-2.
When walking my pet, do I need to clean up after him/her?
Yes,
Cypress residents must clean up after their pets. Pet wastes
left in the parkway can lead to unsanitary conditions and
pose a threat to water quality, as wastes can be washed into
the storm drain and eventually into the ocean. Residents
are reminded that the City's municipal code requires that
pet wastes be removed and disposed of properly and also regulates
what can enter the municipal storm drain system. Please do
your part to protect our local beaches.
F-1.
What do I do if I see someone discharging concrete, paint,
plaster or other material into the gutter?
The only permitted discharge into a gutter is storm water.
The release of concrete, paint, plaster or other materials
is not permitted and is a violation of the City's water quality
ordinance. Anyone who is found illegally discharging into
the storm drain system my be fined under this ordinance.
If you observe someone illegally discharging these types
of materials, or any thing else besides stormwater into a
gutter or catch basin, please call the Department of Public
Works at (714) 229-6740 during normal business hours, or
call the Police Department at (714) 229-6600. You can also
report any known illegal discharges on line at the City's
Pollution
Reporting page.
F-2.
What can I do to help protect water quality in my neighborhood?
Protecting
our water quality is a serious matter and should not be taken
lightly. There are many activities that occur in your neighborhood
that may be contributing to water pollution. Improper application
of pesticides and fertilizers, leaking fluids from your automobile,
animal wastes, litter, as well as urban runoff from home
improvement projects, can all lead to water pollution problems.
You can learn about protecting our local beaches, rivers
and lakes by visiting the City's
Stormwater
Public Education Program.

I operate a food service establishment in the City. Are
there any regulations that impact my business?
Yes!
The City of Cypress has a
Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Program
that impacts local food service establishments identified as
potential producers of grease. These regulations are
in compliance with the State of California Waste Discharge
Requirements and intended to prevent sanitary sewer overflows. Food
service establishments that meet the criteria must obtain a
Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) permit and pay an annual permit
fee.
