The
Cypress Police Department operates a “Temporary
Holding Facility”, which accepts and
detains inmates in accordance with regulations
of the State Board of Corrections. The Jail
provides for the booking, detention, welfare
and supervision of persons arrested for both
felony and misdemeanor crimes. The goal of
this unit is to provide services that insure
the safe and secure detention of inmates
pending their transportation to the Orange
County Jail or another facility. The focus
of the facility is to maintain compliance
with all regulatory legislation authorities.
Juveniles are also processed here as well
and are detained in an area separate from
any adult prisoner contact. The juveniles
are detained until released to a parent/guardian
or transferred to Juvenile Hall.
The
Jail can house up to 15 inmates, operates
24 hours a day and is staffed by six full-time
Police Service Officers (PSO’s). The
Police Service Officers are professionally
trained and have successfully completed a
California Board of Corrections STC certified
Corrections Officer Basic Academy. Police
Service Officers receive current and continued
training consisting of all aspects of corrections
and first aide. The Police Service Officers
are primarily responsible for completing
the booking process of arrestees, including
searching, fingerprinting and photographing
each arrestee. The arrestees undergo a medical
and mental screening prior to being housed
in a cell. They are fed and continually monitored
to ensure their care, safety and well being.
The
Cypress City Jail is inspected annually by
The Board of Corrections, Juvenile Justice
Commission, Orange County Health Department
and Fire Authority, to ensure that it is
in compliance with all the current standards.
When
the jail is empty, the Police Service Officers
are also called upon to perform field duties
such as taking misdemeanor and felony crime
reports, traffic control, crime scene investigation
and patrol checks.
BOOKING
PROCESS
Booking
is the process by which the Police Department
registers and enters charges against a person
believed to have violated the law. The process
of booking includes obtaining the inmate’s
personal information and description, photograph
(Mug shot), fingerprinting and a Department
of Justice records check. Also the inmate’s
personal property and money is taken into
custody by the Police Service Officers. These
items are verified and recorded on the inmates
booking sheet.
Inmates
are asked a series of medical and mental
questions to evaluate their physical and
mental health. After the entire booking process
is completed, or within three hours of entering
the jail, the inmate is allowed to make telephone
calls in accordance with California Penal
Code Section 851.1.
